What if learning history meant stepping right into it? At The Oaks Academy, our students don't just read about the past; they experience it through hands-on, immersive learning. Our curriculum sparks curiosity, nurtures creativity, and creates joyful moments that stay with students long after the class ends.
One example of this approach is a beloved Lower School tradition: the Museum of Ancient Egypt, hosted by our second grade students. During this event, second-grade classrooms transform into museums, and students become knowledgeable docents, leading families and fellow students through exhibits they have carefully prepared.
In the months leading up to museum day, students deepen their historical understanding by studying the land, animals, and daily life of ancient Egypt. They explore the importance of irrigation by constructing shadoofs and creating three-dimensional maps, along with a variety of other exhibits such as salt-dough maps, hieroglyph displays, a crawl-through pyramid, and a mummy exhibit.
After museum day, the second-grade students also get to participate in a Seder meal together. This is the traditional Passover meal to remember the Israelites' exodus from Egyptian slavery into freedom. Students sampled a variety of traditional foods and read passages of Scripture together. Through this immersive experience, students learn about this sacred tradition and appreciate its significance.
The Oaks' active learning experience and process bring history to life, cultivating a rich understanding and a lasting love of learning.
