Each grade level maintains a Google Classroom that includes instructional videos. Parents with students in grades 1 – 5 can also find Into Math homework answer keys with examples of strategies taught in class in their student's Google Classroom.

We ask that parents ensure the answer keys are not viewed by students for the purpose of copying answers. All written responses should reflect the student’s thinking. Students should also use available space to write equations and/or show strategies that helped them solve problems. As our teachers have asked, students should continue to circle any math homework problems that they find to be difficult. Reteaching and additional practice will occur in class.

To access the instructional resources posted in the Google Classroom, you or your child will need to sign in to Google Classroom using your child’s Oaks Academy email address and password. Please note that the email address is a non-working email address and is only used to sign in to Google Classroom and other TOA-approved Google apps.

You will receive your child's email address and password at the beginning of the year. Please do not change your child’s password.

IXL is an online learning platform that provides personalized practice. While IXL practice is not required, it can be a valuable extension to the work we're doing in class. If you decide to incorporate IXL at home, we recommend limiting sessions to 10-15 minutes each, for a total of about 40 minutes per week. This amount of time will help reinforce concepts without overwhelming your child or contributing to excessive screen time.

Access IXL with your child's Google account by selecting “sign in with Google” and using the same credentials that you have for their Google Classroom.

If you see "Sign in as [Account Name]" instead of "Sign in with Google," select that button to open the account selection window. If your child's account appears on the list of accounts, select it. If it does not appear on the list, select "Use another account" and enter your child's login information. 

Students in grades 3 - 8 will take a few ILEARN Checkpoint assessments throughout the year as part of Indiana’s statewide testing program.

ILEARN checkpoints are brief online assessments that measure student progress toward select grade-level standards. Scores on checkpoints do not factor into spring ILEARN scores. Instead, they provide a snapshot of learning that helps teachers adjust instruction throughout the year.

These checkpoints are informational tools, not high-stakes tests.

After each checkpoint, teachers and school leaders carefully reviewed our results, paying particular attention to mathematics. Because the pacing of Into Math does not always align perfectly with the timing of the checkpoints, we examined which math standards students have already been taught and which will be introduced later in the year. This helps us understand how students are performing on taught material and gives us an early sense of how they approached standards they have not yet learned.

Teachers will provide reteaching and targeted support during the school day for students who demonstrated a need for additional practice. Standards that have not yet been taught will be covered later in the year as part of the regular curriculum.

Families are able to view individual student results through the Indiana Parent Portal using their child's access code provided via email during the school year.

The Oaks Academy does not change its teaching or content as a result of fluctuations in state standards or assessments. Faculty and staff at The Oaks review the skills represented by these standards, and our curriculum largely exceeds the requirements of the state. Nonetheless, the state standards are useful as a gauge for what an average student should know and be able to perform at each grade level. We can certainly glean information from the exam to individually assist our students in areas of strength, in areas needing further support, and in evaluating our own curriculum.

The Oaks Academy does not spend excessive time preparing for the test. Students will have had an opportunity to practice the testing format, and the faculty are confident that this will not be a difficult or stressful situation for the students. You may expect to receive the results, along with an explanation of the scores, in couple of months after the test.

2nd-Grade Students

Each March, our second-grade students take the IREAD, a standardized reading assessment that measures foundational reading skills through third grade. Based on guidance from the Indiana Department of Education, The Oaks has steps in place to support students based on their performance on this assessment.

Following the administration of the IREAD, second-grade students may receive a score of “Pass,” “On Track” or “At Risk.”

• Students who receive a “Pass” score will not take the IREAD again in third grade.
• Students who receive an “On Track” score will have an opportunity to retake the IREAD at the end of second grade. If they don’t demonstrate proficiency, they will take the IREAD again in third grade.
• Students who receive an “At Risk” score will receive remediation during the school day, are asked to attend free summer school at The Oaks Academy, and will have the opportunity to participate in the summer retest.

Preliminary results from the IREAD will be made available to The Oaks by mid-March. Families of second-grade students with a score of “At Risk” will be notified at that time and will be invited to attend free summer school. If your child is registered for both Summer Enrichment Camp and summer school, you will receive a partial refund of your camp registration fee. This is because summer school runs during the same time as the first session of Summer Enrichment Camp, and students enrolled in summer school will only attend the afternoons of camp during the first session. 

3rd-Grade Students

Students who have not passed IREAD by the beginning of third grade will take the IREAD again in the second semester of third grade.

• No further IREAD testing will be required for students who pass the retest.
• Third-grade students who do not pass the IREAD will receive remediation during the school day for the remainder of the school year. They will have the opportunity to take an IREAD retest at the end of the school year.
• Third grade students who do not pass the IREAD by the end of the school year are asked to attend free summer school at The Oaks in order to receive additional remediation and another retest opportunity.
• Students who do not pass the IREAD during the final week of June (after summer school) must be retained in third grade, per Indiana legislation.
• Students who qualify for a Good Cause Exemption (GCE) are exempt from the retention mandate, and The Oaks will contact families of students who may qualify for a GCE by the end of the school year.

Good Cause Exemption (GCE) Eligibility
The Oaks Academy will apply for a GCE for students who do not pass IREAD-3 and meet eligibility requirements:

• A student who has previously been retained in third grade.
• The student has an intellectual disability or the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP)/Individualized Service Plan (ISP) specifies that retention is not appropriate, and the student's case conference committee (CCC) has determined that promotion to another grade is appropriate.
• A student who is an identified English learner (EL) who has received services for fewer than two years and has an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) committee that determines promotion to the next grade level is appropriate.
• A student who achieved a performance level of “Proficient” or “Above Proficient” on the third-grade ILEARN Mathematics assessment.
• A student who has received two or more years of intensive intervention in reading aligned to the science of reading and was retained more than once during kindergarten, first grade, or second grade.
